Daily Picture 4-Jan-10: Origins of Life Decorative Panel

Neo-Romanian style decorative panel with a representation of the origins of life symbol, inspired from late medieval Wallachian church decoration. Late 1920s house in Gara de Nord area, Bucharest(©Valentin Mandache)

The life is imaged in this panel as springing up from a primordial seed (the sphere at the centre of the panel) as a ‘Tree of Life’, which in the case of the Romanian lands, and often in the Balkan area, is represented by the vine plant, one of the most important crop producing plants of the regions, very much mentioned in local legends, myths and biblical stories.

I endeavor through this daily image series to inspire appreciation of the historic houses of Romania, a virtually undiscovered, but fascinating chapter of European architectural heritage.
